Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna

Experience Sigmund Freud’s life and works up close

Sigmund Freud lived and worked in the house at 19 Berggasse in Vienna’s 9th district (Alsergrund) in the servite neighbourhood for 47 years. Today, visitors to the museum there wander in the footsteps of the father of psychoanalysis and can admire original furniture, everyday objects and items and pieces from Freud’s antique collection.

You can walk to the museum in about 5 minutes from The Harmonie Vienna hotel.

Museum in Freud’s historical home with personal documents

The museum was set up in 1971 with the help of Freud’s youngest daughter Anna. Authentically furnished rooms like the waiting room and first editions of Freud’s works can be seen. The museum has been expanded time and time again over the years: the installation of a new library was followed by a museum shop, book storage and a lecture and exhibition hall in the family’s newly added private apartment.

One of the highlights is the video room that gives personal insights into Sigmund Freud’s life. Scenes from his private life can be seen in the historic films that have been compiled and commentated by Anna Freud.

Showroom with modern art

The museum has been running a showroom on the ground floor since 2002, which offers space to national and international artists with its large display windows. Their works place psychoanalytical issues and contemporary art in context with each other.
