Autumn – a great time of year to visit Vienna

Unforgettable family holidays in Austria’s capital city

Autumn is a great time of year to visit Vienna. Christmas can be a pretty hectic period full of things to do and people to see, so why not treat yourself and your family to a little time out in October or November before things get busy? Cooler temperatures and clear air make autumn ideal for a city trip to some of Vienna’s most famous sights.

Action and adventure for all the family at the Wurstelprater

One of the most popular activities among families is a day out at the Wurstelprater. This large amusement park in the Leopoldstadt district of the city has plenty of highlights for the young and the young-at-heart. The highlight is, of course, the huge Ferris wheel for which the park is famous, but there are lots of other rides and attractions like a scary ghost train, a fun Punch & Judy puppet theatre, the world-famous Madame Tussauds museum of incredibly lifelike wax figures, and lots more stalls and stands offering action and adventure for all the family. From the Wurstelprater it is just a short walk over to the Grüner Prater with its trees and widen open spaces. These gardens contain several play areas for children plus a BMX and skateboard park and beach volleyball courts open to the public.

The Augarten – a great place to get away from it all

With golden-brown leaves carpeting the ground and horse chestnuts here and there waiting to be collected, Vienna’s Augarten is a great place for an autumn walk. This large park in the city has no fewer than five play areas for children. Vienna’s oldest baroque gardens are also home to Europe’s second-oldest porcelain factory, where visitors can take a guided tour of the factory and museum. A great way to discover the secrets behind this centuries-old handicraft!

Enjoy the taste of Vienna at the Naschmarkt

Vienna’s Naschmarkt market is famous throughout Austria and beyond for its huge range of food on offer, including delicacies from around the world. Browse the stands, try some of the produce and finish off with a meal in one of the local restaurants. On Saturdays there is a flea market here with lots of bargains to be had. The Naschmarkt is the best place to enjoy the true taste of Vienna in all its diversity.
