Theatre and opera in Vienna
A cultural holiday in the cosmopolitan city of Vienna
The Schauspielhaus in Porzellangasse is a small theatre that offers modern, worthwhile productions time and time again. You can walk there in 5 minutes. You can reach the Burgtheater by D-Tram in 10 minutes, and the State Opera in 15 minutes.
Today’s Volksoper was opened in 1898 as the “Kaiser-Jubiläums-Stadttheater” and only run as a theatre first of all. The Volksoper offers a huge variety of performing arts: operas, classical musicals, contemporary dance and concerts as well as operettas – with more than 300 performances per season.
Vienna’s Burgtheater was an institution of standing long before it moved into the prestigious building on the Ring. Roughly 250 years ago a ballroom next to the Hofburg was converted into a theatre. This soon developed into one of the top addresses for German-speaking acting and the Burgtheater still is today.
Built by the architects Fellner and Hellmer and Ludwig Baumann between 1911 and 1913, the Akademietheater has been the Burgtheater’s second venue since 1922. The stage for chamber performances is situated close to Schwarzenbergplatz and can be reached by taking the U2 or U4 from The Harmonie Vienna hotel.
You can also reach the State Opera by D-Tram.
The Theater in der Josefstadt is also one of the most important German-speaking theatres with more than 700 performances per season. Ferdinand Raimund and Johann Nestroy have acted here, Johann Strauß has directed here. Max Reinhardt had the Josefstadt grandly renovated in 1924 – an opulent ambience that still exists today.
The Volkstheater was founded in 1889 with the intention of providing an educational counterpart to the exclusive Burgtheater. Today it puts on numerous premieres and debuts as well as Austrian and international classics.
You can reach the Theater in der Josefstadt and the Volkstheater with the U2 from The Harmonie Vienna.
